Heidegger's thinking on Architecture

The relationship of man & God

As I know, God creates human and human creates themselves to this world.
For example the temple. The temple building encloses the figure of the God, and in this concealment lets it stand out into the holy precinct through the open portico. By means of the temple, God is present in the temple. This presence of the God is in itself the extension and delimitation of the precinct as a holy precinct. The temple and its precinct, however, do not fade away into the indefinite. It is the templework that first fits together and at the same time gathers around itself the unity of those paths and relations in which birth and death, disaster and blessing, victory and disgrace, endurance and decline acquire the shape of destiny for human beings.

The relationship of man & nature

Man is also a nature. All the existences were the creation of Almighty God. All the creations were given some knowledge and man only given the super sense of common the sixth sense to know everything. While nature contrasts with human society and the outer world contrasts to the individual, the outer world includes both nature and human society. Thus, the relation between man and nature is actually that between human society and nature, not between an individual and one's outer world. Obviously, an individual can form a relationship with nature but, because one is not able to exist without society, in forming a relationship with nature an individual must act as one of the particles of human society.

Personal trip to a temple

As the assignment that given by the lecturer, I did a personal trip to 1 of chinese temple in KL named Thean Hou Temple. It was completed in 1987 and officially opened in 1989. The property belongs to and is run by the Selangor and Federal Territory Hainan Association. This temple, built by the Hainanese community living in Kuala Lumpur is dedicated to Goddess Tian Hou (The Heavenly Mother).

Thean Hou temple was constructed between 1981 and 1987 at a cost of approximately 7 million ringgit

The installation dates of the Goddesses are as follows:

  • 16 November 1985 - Tian Hou
  • 19 October 1986 - Guan Yin
  • 16 November 1986 - Shui Wei Sheng Niang

The temple was officially opened on 3 September 1989.

Architectural Features

This syncretic temple with elements of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism is a grandiose structure and represents a successful combination of modern architectural techniques and authentic traditional design featuring imposing pillars, spectacular roofs, ornate carvings and intricate embellishments. Its grand architecture has made it a popular tourist destination.

The front entrance of the temple features a multi-arched gateway with red pillars, the colour symbolic of prosperity and good fortune. Souvenir stalls and a canteen are found on the 1st level. The 2nd level houses the multi-purpose hall while offices are located on the 3rd level. The 4th level has 3 tiers and the prayer hall is located here.

Prayer Hall

The prayer hall houses 3 altars, each with a sculpture of one deity or goddess. As one enters the prayer hall, the altar on the right is dedicated to Guan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy. Tian Hou is in the centre while Shui Wei Sheng Niang (the Goddess of the Waterfront) is at the left. In the middle of the hall and between the altars are two pairs of Kau Cim oracles that can be used by visitors.

Despite the dedication to Tian Hou, worship of Guan Yin (or "Guan Shi-Yin") is a recurrent theme at the Thean Hou Temple.

Followings are some images and sketch that I've done after visited :

The Concept of Place

From my opinion through the topic The concept of Place which has a meaning of "Place of action and Point of departure".
I think this theories have so many detail informations and drawings by the legendary expert architects such as "The walking City of Ron herron which define place in terms of relatively anonymous mega-structures", Peter Cook the spokesman of the English Archigram group, Milton Webber the American urbanist expert, Kevin Lynch, The Architectural theorist Christopher Alexander, etc.

In this theory, what we can learn is actually a very detail of architectural documentations which provided by our father of architecture.
From the location of buildings, landscapes and environments, site planning, space planning, human circulation, the proper concept application in the building and developments, methods, elementations and the technic of constructions. They did so much experimental things about architecture and there's a meaning behind on every each building and existential spaces they have done.

Minority Report - Film Review

The Basic Plot line

Minority Report is a 2002 science fiction neo-noir directed by Steven Spielberg and loosely based on the short story "The Minority Report" by Philip K. Dick .In 2054, an experimental Washington, D.C. police force called Precrime has completely cut murder in the city. Precrime employs three "precogs", mutated humans with precognition to view murders that occur in the future; the officers of Precrime then analyze and interpret the three visions to track down and stop the murder before it happens. John Anderton is chief of the force, working under its director Lamar Burgess, however, he hides the fact that he is addicted to drug called neuroin since the disappearance of his son Sean, which also caused his wife Lara to leave him.

Using Agatha's future insight to avoid capture, Anderton takes Agatha to a hacker to try to extract her vision of Leo Crow's murder, but finds it is the same as the original report. However, Agatha then provides Anderton with her vision of the death of a woman named Anne Lively, which Anderton records. Chased by Precrime, Anderton and Agatha end up at the apartment where Crow is to die; they find his room, covered with hundreds of pictures of children including Sean. When Crow enters, Anderton holds him at gunpoint, but Crow denies any involvement with Sean, and that he is only here to be killed by Anderton to have his family paid off handsomely. Anderton refuses to kill Crow and demands to know who had set this up, but Crow forces himself on Anderton's gun and makes him pull the trigger, killing him as predicted. Anderton and Agatha flee to Lara's home, while Witwer and Precrime investigate the crime scene.

Burgess then kills Witwer, noting that without Agatha, the precog hive mind wouldn't be able to predict this murder. After being taken in by Lara, Anderton comes to realize that Anne Lively is Agatha's mother, and the knowledge of her death is the reason for the manhunt against him, and shares this with Lara. Precrime eventually arrives at Lara's home and Anderton is taken into custody, while Agatha is put back into the system. Burgess, preparing for a celebratory dinner for the Precrime program, consoles Lara, but accidentally reveals more about Lively's murder then he should know. Lara calls in help from Anderton's former friends to free Anderton from prison. During the dinner, Anderton calls Burgess while Agatha's vision of Lively's death is played for the guests. The footage clearly shows Burgess as the murderer, having set up a false target just as Witwer had predicted. Burgess had killed Lively to stop her from attempting to take her daughter Agatha back. Burgess had then set up Anderton in order to cover up Anderton's knowledge.

As Burgess finds and draws a gun on Anderton, Precrime receives reports that Burgess will kill Anderton. Thus demonstrating Precrime works but becoming a murderer himself, or he can spare him, showing Precrime as a failure. If one knows his or her own future, he or she can change it. Burgess decides to commit suicide and kills himself as Precrime arrive at the scene. As a result, the Precrime division is shut down, with all those incarcerated by them released. Far out on a remote island, where they can no longer be troubled by future visions.

The Impressive or Unimpressive about the movie

After watched this movie, I think this director has a such a creative and imaginative thinking to encourage people to understand and figure it out what is actually this movie means. More to tactics and mysterious movie. One of the main questions the film raises is whether the future is set or whether free will can alter the future.

Another things that impress me in this movie is their technology :

  • Driverless car which could be commanded by the police to deliver their occupant to the police station.
  • Iris Recognition systems which tracked the movements of all citizens, and were also used for authentication and payment, and to deliver highly targeted advertising to passers-by.
  • Mobile surveillance robots which swarm through a building and use iris recognition to find a sought person.
  • A high speed gestural user interface for computers, where hands are moved in front of a screen

Intention of this film

The intention that the director want to carries out is the paranoid side of the futuristic world.
The director was trying to mention that everyone's future is in everyone's own hands. Choices that we make are important because it will determine our future. Thinking deeply before actions.

Impact of this movie to design thinking

I think this movie have a great impact to design thinking especially the technologies that they created in this movie because I'm sure that the future technology will be developed stronger and better.

My Story

It's a damn long story to tell if I wanna describe it all from my childhood memories which was bad things are more than a good things to describe.
Let's pick some good points of mine since I was in a childhood moments. ^^

yea, I had a dream which was never be happened in my future and it's a "PILOT".
This idea was then disappeared after I knew that I'm very poor at geography but
indeed every pilot must be very good in this field. This is my dream when I was in
primary school.
But then when I was in secondary high school, I started to fall in love with drawing since I had admitted that I have got a talent in this field. It's hard to believe that I love drawing until almost all of my note books were fully drawn without writing any notes that given by teachers at that time.
I do development with my drawing skill every time while I'm drawing. Try to think the
things that no one could be able to draw and create. Kinda selfish huh? ^^
But at the last moment before my secondary high school farewell, it's so sudden that my mind has came out the idea to study further
overseas in this design field and finally I've chose to study Interior Design in Malaysia.

The motive I choose this field is because of some encouragements which make me to be stronger and more confident to walk through all these.
At the very first moment while I had a discussion with my dad about study further in Interior Design field, he strongly agreed with my idea and fully supporting me to following my decision.
Beside that, I think even if I know my life will be a little more stress and busier than before.
To the good of my future life, I need to be stronger and I'm sure this is the way I am and what I will be.

During studying my career and opportunities in this field, I admit that getting beyond the best and worst experiences in studying architecture are a part of beneficence and strong encouragement to improving myself in the field and career that I stand on.
The best experience of mine during studying architecture is to realize that own the knowledge and experiences are not only the money that so easy we could spent onto it but instead of our efforts to laying hands on.
The worst experiences that I've known in studying architecture might be a lack of the lecturing systems and professionalism that one school has got. Beside the effort of every students have, the profession of lecturers themselves are also a very important encouragement to students. Because every students will appraise to every lecturer's characteristics. (denoted) ^^

Else, I'm sure that everyone has the best and worst habits throughout studies, and neither have I.
Best habits that I've got :
- I will just have a gasp after I keep all my responsibilities done.
- Do up brown with all the things earlier instead of last minutes work.
-
Set strict demands on oneself in all respects.
- Willing to accept any criticism and inputs.
Worst habits that I've got :
- Chaotic
- Slow in memorizing

The things that keep me going through this field are as below :
- Self-Interests and achievement
- Creativity exploration
- The career and opportunities as it worth
- Family supports
- Spoke in praise of my efforts.
